Don’t let the people involved with various academies vote on awards. Why?
Because they suck at it. Witness the Emmys and the Golden Globes … two sets of awards where it becomes at notable as to whom was skipped over for a nomination as it is who is nominated.

The Katey Sagals and Nick Offermans of the world get overlooked for the banal choices of the Mariska Hargitays and Chris Colfers, simply because those voters either don’t have the imagination to think out of the box or are too limited by the same choices over and over.

The Television Critics Association awards (the TCAs) should be the go-to awards for the TV industry. People ought to be saying “Who is up for the TCA?” rather than “Who will win an Emmy?”

Just look at this year’s winners:
Individual Achievement in Drama: Jon Hamm, Mad Men (AMC)
Individual Achievement in Comedy: Ty Burrell, Modern Family (ABC) and Nick Offerman, Parks and Recreation (NBC)
Outstanding Achievement in News and Information: Restrepo (NatGeo)
Outstanding Achievement in Reality Programming: Amazing Race (CBS)
Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming: Sesame Street (PBS)
Outstanding New Program: Game of Thrones (HBO)
Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries and Specials: Masterpiece: Sherlock (PBS)
Outstanding Achievement in Drama: Mad Men (AMC)
Outstanding Achievement in Comedy: Modern Family (ABC)
Career Achievement Award: Oprah Winfrey
Heritage Award: The Dick Van Dyke Show
Program of the Year: Friday Night Lights (DirecTV/NBC)

Any arguments among these choices? No? Didn’t think so.

They even had the foresight to pick both Burrell and Offerman, two of the funniest characters on TV. My only gripe is that they don’t have separate categories for actors and actresses.

No kowtowing to the tired Glee or overrated Boardwalk Empire. Meanwhile, shows like Friday Night Lights, Game of Thrones, and Sherlock are getting their due. You won’t see that at the Golden Globes.

Hollywood talent has a way of trying to find which trend is hip and jump aboard, or honor someone with a long career simply because it’s his or her “time,” rather than truly honor what is best.

The TCA only picks the best; therefore, it is the best.
