Jennifer Purdie signed a contract with Ulysses Press to write a non-fiction book on athletes and having a growth mindset. Title is TBD. The expected publication date is Fall 2017.
The Atlantic published an article Karen Jordan wrote that is based on the subject of her book, which is about the life of her great-grandfather, the first African-American doctor in Coweta County, Georgia. Read it here.

Listen to GetPublished! Radio. “Your host Gerald Everett Jones has the answers – because he’s already made all the mistakes himself,” radio announcer Bill Navarro quips. The podcast, which has been available on iTunes and other channels since last April, moved to a half-hour weekly broadcast, Sundays at Noon Pacific, on KNNN 87.7 FM in Redding, California. Mineral School, a newer artists residency in a former elementary school in Mineral, WA, a fishing lake town near Mt. Rainier, has begun taking applications for 2017 writing residencies. Summer residencies are two weeks long, nominally priced ($425) and include room, board (allergies accommodated), visiting author presentations, and opportunities for writing residents to read publicly. During the fall, we’re also offering 8 free one-week residencies to parent authors via support from The Sustainable Arts Foundation. These free residencies have a reduced ($10) application fee and feature visiting author Claire Dederer (Poser) and Neal Thompson (A Curious Man). Final deadline is 2/15/17. The Todos Santos Writers Workshop is coming up February 5 – 11 in Baja. Classes in Fiction, Nonfiction, Memoir, with craft seminars and special guest speakers. Join us in our Pueblo Magico by the sea for the story of your life.
The Tahoma Literary Review is accepting narrative nonfiction submissions on any subject. Full guidelines are here. Also accepting fiction and poetry submissions. They currently pay between $30 and $100.

January 17: SoCal JAWS’ 3rd Annual Goal-Setting Workshop at Nextspace in Culver City, CA. LA writers, join JAWS to reflect on what you achieved in 2016 and look ahead to the coming year. You do not need to be a member of JAWS to participate. Email me for details and RSVP info.
January 20: Media Law for Journalists Workshop and Roundtable, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm, at Southwestern Law School, 3050 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. Admission is $20 and includes a light breakfast and lunch. Parking is $10 per car. Get details and register.
January 27 – 29: Carolyn Howard-Johnson will be presenting at the GenreLA Creative Writing Conference. This educational and inspirational conference will focus on science fiction, fantasy, horror, and steampunk, as well as mainstream fiction and screenplay. Many New York Times Bestselling authors will be appearing. Carolyn will be speaking on how to make no-cost reviews the center of a marketing program for any genre!
